“HE’S IN V-FIB.” BLUE stared unblinking at Enzo. He frowned, looking confused, so she said it again. “He’s in V-fib. I don’t—” She fell quiet as Dr. Jackson came around the corner and sprinted past them, going through the same door the crash cart had disappeared through. She started after him and then stopped, looking down at her gloved hands. She’d jumped into CPR as they rolled him in, replacing the paramedic, and then Char had pulled her away. She stared at her hands, still seeing their purple outline on her father’s unmoving chest.

She became aware of Enzo’s hand on her elbow, gently moving her to one side in the hallway. “Blue, maybe there’s somewhere we could wait?”

She kept an arm around Murphy and led them into a small room across the hall. She shut the door and took Hook from Enzo, setting him on the floor. The cat darted underneath the green vinyl couch Blue perched on. Five minutes ago, she’d been sitting at the nurses’ station with her supervisor Char, sipping coffee. Next shift was coming on and things had been slow except for the incoming Coast Guard patient. She looked up at Enzo. “They won’t let me in there.”

He took a seat and leaned toward her, elbows on knees. “That’s okay. You trust them, right? I’m sure they’re doing everything they can.”

She scowled at him. “Don’t. I hate that. That’s what we always say. It doesn’t—” She cut herself off, feeling Murphy watching her.

“Is he gonna die?” he demanded. “He was fine! He was fishing and he got a big one and he was laughing at my joke! He was okay. I don’t get it!”

“Murph.” She tried to pull him closer but he jerked away. Blue folded her hands in her lap. “They’ll help him, Murph. They will. That’s my team. They’re good. They’ll save him.” Oh God, what if she was lying? She’d seen the EKG readout, his blue lips, his purple nailbeds. She’d heard the paramedics. Her dad had failed to respond to everything so far—epi, atropine, amiodarone. Through the window of the family lounge, she saw the cardiothoracic surgeon on call go into her dad’s room. It was killing her not to be in there. Char had told her they’d come get her as soon as they could.

Murphy slid off the couch to the floor, putting a hand out to the cat. He drew his knees up to his chest, which made him look even smaller than he was.

“Why are you here?” Blue asked Enzo. It had just occurred to her. How had he even gotten involved in all this? How had Enzo ended up with their son?

He stood. “Oh. I’m sorry. I’ll go.”

“No,” Blue said, suddenly gripped with panic. Which was at least better than the thick dread pressing down on her. He couldn’t leave, she needed him here. “No, please, Enzo. Don’t go. I meant, how—how did you end up with Murphy? Nobody has told me what happened.”

“Salvi and I were on the water and heard Murphy’s distress call.
